D8 Monday Review: St. David Seniors Escape Rez with Win

After a 1-1 start to the season, I got back on track with my D8 picks on Monday night, getting both to improve to 3-1 on the campaign.

Execution down the stretch. How many times have you heard people say it?

The St. David Celtics put those words into action on Monday night as they were able to hold off the Resurrection Phoenix by a 49-47 count. The win helps them avoid an 0-2 start which would have likely already prevented them from capturing the regular season D8 Championship.

The Celtics ran solid offense for open shots down the stretch, while the younger Phoenix forced a few shots and passes inside.

After the Celtics extended to a four point lead with under 1:00 to go, Resurrection's Matt Stocco hit two free throws to cut the lead to two. Resurrection then stole the inbounds pass, however, Stocco didn't see rookie Andrew Mwangi's pass resulting in an out-of-bounds turnover.

With Rez down by 2 and under :10 to play, rookie Tyler Schneider missed a 3-point attempt that was rebounded by the Celtics, who were promptly fouled with :02 on the clock. However, 2 missed free throws kept the score at 49-47, and a Resurrection timeout allowed them to set for one last play.

That play had Rez QB Jason Chris throwing the ball in; however, his pass attempt for Tyler Schneider was "intercepted" at midcourt, ending the game.

Nick Robeleck was the Celtics (and game's) high scorer with 13 points, while Dan Hummel contributed 12. Mwangi had 12 points for Resurrection, with Stocco adding 9.
