Weekend Review: Lions Continue To Roar

Lions Win EDSS Junior Tournament

The St. James Lions continued to roll this past weekend, going 3-0 and capturing yet another tournament --- this time the Elmira DSS Invitational.

In the process, the Lions extended their season record to 16-1, with their only loss being a game in Toronto that 4 starters missed due to traffic issues (not being able to make the game due to a road closure) or injury.

Their three games on the weekend saw the Lions defeat host Elmira DSS 57-21 (Brittany Gazzola, 20); Walkerton Sacred Heart 63-10 (Maddi McGarr 12, Ashley Benham 11); and Stratford Northwestern 58-26 (Brittany Gazzola, 23 - including 3 threes).

The Lions resume their D10 league schedule on Thursday when they play host to Centre Wellington.  Game time is 4:00pm.

Eastwood Gets Solid Games in Kingston

The ECI Rebels' senior girls basketball team travelled to Kingston, Ontario, this past weekend to participate in the Queen's University tournament.

The Rebels' first opponent, Thousand Islands Secondary School from Brockville, is historically known as a girls' basketball powerhouse.  The alma mater of former WNBA star Stacey Dales, they have won 7 of the last 12 EOSSAA titles.

At any rate, despite 19 points from star forward Michelle Hudyn, the Rebels dropped a 35-29 decision to the Pirates.

However, ECI did rebound in their second contest, against Markham DHS where they came away with a 45-34 victory thanks to 16 points from Caitlyn Schlegel and 15 from Hudyn.

The Rebels then dropped their third and final contest to St. Mary's HS of Brockville, 33-28, despite leading for most of the second half.  Hudyn again topped the scoring with 20 points.

Eastwood has a huge week ahead of them in WCSSAA league play --- they host Cameron Heights tomorrow afternoon (5:00pm) and then travel to Bluevale on Thursday (3:30pm).  All three of those teams are off to 3-0 starts on the season.
