The Brantford Collegiate Mustangs edged the Assumption College Lions in a hotly contested, drama-filled senior girls basketball game Thursday.
The Mustangs used their height advantage to beat the speedy Lions 48-43.
Tori Candy led the Mustangs with 17 points, of which most came from under the hoop as the forward used her size to score layups and draw fouls. Her efforts were supported by Claudia DeFrancesco, who scored 12 points including four from the foul line.
The drama hit when BCI coach Ron Jamula, upset by an official's foul call on one of his players, went onto the court to object.
He was hit with a technical foul and told to sit on the bench. He returned to the bench and was hit with another technical and ejected from the game.
So, with only 36 seconds left in the second quarter Assumption got six free throws, of which the Lions made three. The half ended with BCI ahead 27-21.
But the drama continued.
The official, who had ejected Jamula, objected to the coach remaining behind the scorer's table when the second half began. After some discussion, the official left the game, and a replacement official was used.
The Lions pulled to within two points, 27-25, and the Mustangs, with Jacqui Jamula on the bench because of foul trouble, were on their heels.
The Lions got a boost from a couple of three-pointers from Jericka Baldin, who finished the game with 15 points. But that wasn't enough. Emily Gill scored nine for the Lions
In the junior game Assumption beat BCI 52-25 with Alex Vandyk leading the Lions with 14 points and Alexis Poirier 10. The Colts got seven points from Cara Humeniuk and four from Lexis Lancaster.
In other Brant County girls' basketball action St. John's College swept both games against Paris District High School.
Brooke Glover scored nine and Miranda eight points to lead the senior Green Eagles to a 33-20 victory. Sam Ferrettii scored 12 for Paris.
In the junior contest Megan Thompson scored 12 and Brianna Bavota scored seven as the Green Eagles cruised to a 51-17 victory. Beth Stulen scored five, Alex Forsyth and Stephanie Sharp scored four each.
At North Park Collegiate, the juniors beat Pauline Johnson Collegiate 50-19 with Taylor Greenwood leading the way with 16 points including five three-pointers. Abbey Johnston scored 14 for NPC. And PJC was led by Natasha Irwin with eight points and Shelby Laughlin with six.
In the senior contest, Allyson DeLorenzi scored 22 points and Reo Roland scored 11 to lead the North Park to a 67-12 victory. Zoe Wickson scored six for PJC.
