Pick: Elmira by 24
Despite beating the Jacob Hespeler Hawks on the final day of the regular season, the Lancers find themselves playing in a first-round playoff game --- though, that's not necessarily a bad thing as they get an extra game in before a battle with WODSS on Thursday. In other words, I'll pick EDSS to win.
(6) Cameron Hts. vs (11) WCI
Regular Season: CHCI W, 28-25
Pick: Cameron by 5
The WCI Vikings have surged down the stretch to grab one of the playoff spots. And, in an interesting twist, they could put themselves in possible position for a CWOSSA "AAAA" berth with a win today and some help from some other teams (i.e. AAA schools beating AAAA teams). That said, the regular season game was at WCI and the Cameron gym is always a tough place to play for visiting clubs. Gaels should sneak one out here; I again expect a low-scoring affair.
(7) Grand River vs. (10) KCI -- 3:30pm
Regular Season: GRCI W, 31-22
Pick: Grand River by 12
The Rens are another team hoping that the Vikes can knock off Cameron today, as that result coupled with a GRCI win would propel the Renegades into the CWOSSA #2 position. Look for Coach Reynolds and his girls to advance to the quarterfinals with a win here today.
(8) Southwood vs. (9) SJAM -- 5:00pm
Regular Season: DNP
Pick: Southwood by 7
Another tough game to call, and one that should be close --- though that's not saying much since it is the 8 vs. 9 matchup. I'll roll with the homecourt Sabres.
Senior Girls - All 3:30pm Starts
(5) Eastwood vs. (12) Jacob Hespeler
Regular Season: ECI W, 35-24
Pick: ECI by 21
Look for the Rebels to advance here, though the Hawks can make it interesting with good performances from key players like Sarah Guttin.
(6) Bluevale vs. (11) SJAM
Regular Season: BCI W, 35-32
Pick: BCI by 10
The Highlanders have a shot if they can keep this game in the 30s (like their first meeting). However, should this be a game in the 40s or more, I would expect the Knights to win going away.
(7) Preston vs. (10) Grand River
Regular Season: PHS W, 42-37
Pick: PHS by 3
These teams just met last Thursday, with Preston pulling out a 5 point win. To me, this is the most intriguing of the first-round matchups and I expect yet another close ball game. I'll give PHS a 3-point edge based strictly upon home court advantage --- definitely a game to keep an eye on.
(8) Southwood vs. (9) Elmira
Regular Season: SSS W, 36-28
Pick: EDSS by 4
Well, I have to take at least one "upset" here. I'll tag the Lancers who have battled injuries throughout the year and are getting healthy at the right time.
