The Brantford Collegiate Institute Mustangs senior girls basketball team is headed into a tough high school semifinal matchup on about the best note possible.
A buzzer-beating three-pointer from way outside the arc won the Mustangs the annual BCI-Assumption College tournament on the weekend.
“There was an inbound pass to Lexi (Lancaster) and she passed it to me,” Grade 11 player Victoria Waud said. “There was no time left so I had to shoot it.”
Waud hit her mark and the Mustangs were celebrating a hard-fought tournament win.
“Everyone went pretty crazy,” Waud said. “I couldn’t believe it went in. I wasn’t set up for a good shot.”
The Mustangs will face the North Park Collegiate Trojans in a Brant high school semifinal on Thursday.
After defeating the Trojans earlier in the season by a single point, the Mustangs fell to North Park in a rematch a couple weeks ago.
They will be looking to move on to the best-of-three final series that will begin next week.
“We got to try out some of our new offences in the tournament that we plan to bring to the playoffs,” Waud said. “It was really good to get a chance to play against some top teams right before the postseason.”
The Mustangs defeated the Holy Trinity Titans from Simcoe, the Cameron Heights Collegiate Golden Gaels from Kitchener and the Cardinal Newman Cardinals from Hamilton in the tournament at Assumption College on the weekend.
Following a 54-15 quarter-final victory by the Trojans over the Pauline Johnson Collegiate Thundebirds on Tuesday evening, the date for the semifinal was set.
The game will be played on Thursday at 7 p.m. at BCI.
The Assumption Lions punched their way through to the other semifinal with a 57-27 win over the Paris District High School Panthers on Tuesday at Assumption College.
The Lions will face the undefeated St. John’s College Green Eagles at 5:30 p.m. on Thursday at SJC.
In the junior games, the Trojans held off the Panthers 53-33 to advance to the semifinals against the Green Eagles at 4 p.m. on Thursday at St. John’s College.
The BCI Mustangs defeated the PJC Thunderbirds 50-19 to move on to the semis against the Lions on Thursday at 4 p.m. at Assumption College.
Next week’s best-of-three championship series will be hosted at PDHS.
