The Brantford Collegiate Institute Mustangs want to see themselves in the finals of the Brant high school senior girls basketball league.
But with only two spaces available in the final – one of them likely going to the powerhouse St. John's College Green Eagles – there is only one other spot left for some very good basketball teams.
"That is the ultimate goal," Mustangs player Bailey Vachon said. "We want to see ourselves in that final with St. John's or (against) someone else, that would be fine, too. But we want to be one of those teams in the final."
While the Green Eagles aren't assured of a spot in the final by any means, the team has soundly defeated all other competition and is the seven-time defending Brant champion.
After the Green Eagles, there is a logjam for second place.
The Mustangs are tied with the Assumption College Lions and North Park Trojans with a 4-3 record.
"It's going to be a close game in the semifinal, whoever it is," Vachon said.
In order to be prepared to accomplish their goal, Vachon said the team has to work on putting in more points during games.
"I think our defense is already there," she said. "But we aren't always putting up enough points to win games. We are taking shots early, not getting rebounds and turning the ball over. We need to work on our offense during the coming weeks."
The Mustangs have a couple of tournaments and three more league games to work out their attack before the playoffs start Oct. 29.
The second place teams have all beaten up on each other so far this season.
The Mustangs and Trojans each have a win against the other, while the Trojans and Lions have each beaten the other team once.
If BCI wants to separate themselves from the other two, they will have to do it on Thursday at their home gym against the Lions at 7:30 p.m.
The Mustangs defeated the Lions by one point earlier this season and would gain the advantage for second place with the win.
