D8: A Tale of Two Halves in RCSS-SMHS Junior Game

It was a tale of two halves on Monday with regards to the Resurrection-St. Mary's junior girls' basketball game.

The D8 junior league has been extremely competitive, with most games among the top four teams being decided by single digits.  This one was no exception, although it certainly didn't look like it early when Resurrection raced to a 25-9 halftime lead.

However, the Eagles flipped the script in the second 16 minutes, outscoring Rez 23-9, and forcing the Phoenix to hang on for dear life in a 34-32 win.

Sarah Schultz, the D8's top scorer on the season at 16.8 PPG, didn't hit her average in this one but still led all scorers with 14.  Ellen McGowan and Andrea Phillipi added 6 each for Rez.

Angela Mercurio was in double-digits for the Eagles with 10, while Sydney Greulich added 7.

The other D8 junior game on Monday was no contest as the St. David Celtics rolled the Rockway Flames 65-9.  Shannon Pringle (16) and Heather Sandall (13) led the way for SDCSS, while Emilie Vos and Steph Veltri had 4 each for the Flames.

Senior
The improving Resurrection Phoenix put up a much better effort in their second try at the St. Mary's Eagles, clawing their way to a 10-7 lead at the end of the first quarter.  However, SMHS was too much in the end and would go on to a 48-41 win.

The usual suspects were prominent on the scoring sheet, with Kaitlyn Schenck leading the Eagles with 19 and Laura Boterman adding 15.  Jacqui Rodrigues had a game-high 23 for Rez, with Janelle Santi notching 10.

The other D8 game saw Jenn Woods (16) and Brooke Logel (8) lead the St. David Celtics to their second win, 48-17 over the Rockway Flames.  Emma Kschesinski (8) and Ashley Cullen (6) topped the Rockway scoresheet.

Analysis & Standings
Resurrection's junior win virtually assures them of a home playoff game, provided they don't slip up against MDCSS or Rockway in either of those games (given that they only allowed 8 and 7 points respectively in their first game, I don't see that happening).

Junior D8 Standings
1.  Resurrection 6-0
2.  St. David 5-1
3.  St. Mary's 3-3
4.  St. Benedict 2-3
5.  Mons. Doyle 1-4
6.  Rockway 0-6

In the senior circuit, St. Mary's is now two games clear of Rez & St. Benedict in the loss column at 6-0.  With only one "true test" remaining (SBCSS) the Eagles should finish in first.  There is still a lot to be determined though, with the battles for 2nd (RCSS/SBCSS) and the final playoff spot -slash- CWOSSA berth (MDCSS/SDCSS) on the horizon.

Senior D8 Standings
1.  St. Mary's 6-0
2.  Resurrection 4-2
3.  St. Benedict 3-2
4.  Mons. Doyle 2-3
5.  St. David 2-4
6.  Rockway 0-6
