The field for the annual Heinbuch Basketball tournament in Kitchener-Waterloo (well, Kitchener anyways) has been sorted out. The tournament is set to go for November 25th and 26th.
Among the 16 entrants are a total of 5 CWOSSA-based teams:
Grand River CI
Forest Heights CI
Resurrection CSS
St. Mary's CHS
JF Ross CVI
They'll be joined by 11 more teams from out of town:
Governor Simcoe (St. Catharines)
Northern (Toronto)
Northern (Sarnia)
Pope John Paul II (Scarborough)
Pope John Paul II (Scarborough)
Oakwood (Toronto)
Mother Teresa (Scarborough)
J. Clarke Richardson (Ajax)
Loyola (Oakville)
St. Thomas More (Hamilton)
MacNab (Hamilton)
Cardinal Newman (Stoney Creek)
Of course, all teams are subject to change until we receive the "official confirmation" from Heinbuch officials.
With many prep defections having hit some of the GTA teams hard, this year might be as good as any for a local team to put together a run and possibly walk away with the title. Of course, an extended football season or a trip to OFSAA volleyball (that same weekend --- looking at you FHCI or GRCI) might play a role in preventing that.
No local (K-W) team has ever won the tournament. KCI came close in 2004, losing to Mother Teresa in the finals. They are the lone local team to even make it to the finals in its current format.
