Hard to believe that we're (essentially) half-way through the WCSSAA season already. Although it's difficult to give out "team awards", I'll send a special shoutout to the Forest Heights Trojans, Elmira Lancers and Cameron Heights Golden Gaels as definite "surprise teams" to this point in the season. Given their respective schedules (not to mention many key losses to graduation), I didn't see them as a combined 13-5 at this point in the year. So, congrats on the hot starts!
Now, moving on to my "mid-way All-Star squads". Note that only league games are reflected in my opinions here. Furthermore, all players are not listed in any particular order (rather, alphabetically by school name):
WCSSAA Midway 1st Team All-Stars
Liz McLellan, Cameron Heights
Big reason as to why the Gaels are off to a 5-1 start. Has provided solid leadership alongside scoring abilities (four 20+ efforts in WCSSAA play). Currently averaging 20.2 PPG in league play.
Michelle Hudyn, Eastwood
An obvious selection for this D-1 (Missouri) commit to be included on the list. Has fired off CWOSSA-high scoring effort of 39 against Preston, and has added in 2 more 30+ efforts. Currently averaging 26.5 PPG in league play.
Blair McNaughton, Forest Heights
Hard to believe she's only in grade 11 with the way that she's been playing. Currently averaging 19.2 PPG, McNaughton has combined with teammate Sara Potter to give the Trojans a solid 1-2 scoring punch. She put home 50 points in 2 league games last week, and has allowed FHCI to get off to a 4-2 start this year ---- keeping in mind they went 1-11 a year ago.
Lindsay Lessard, WCI
Though WCI hasn't needed huge scoring efforts from her to this point in the season, Lessard has come through with several 15+ outings in addition to excellent defense & rebounding. Has one of the nicest shooting strokes in the league.
Lindsay Taylor, WCI
Taylor is a guard who can light things up in a hurry from three-point range, but can also lock down defensively. I'm sure she'd be among the league leaders in steals if stats were kept.
WCSSAA Midway 2nd Team All-Stars
Natalie Bishop, Bluevale
Was a standout in junior last year for the CWOSSA runner-up Knights and has bolstered Bluevale's backcourt with her strong start to the season. Has a strong all-around game, with the ability to penetrate or hit from three. Almost outscored undefeated Cameron Heights with 22 points herself last week.
Krista Wiens, Elmira
Another youthful member of this list, the grade 11 rookie has been a key performer in Elmira's 4 wins to start the season, including their upset victory over Eastwood. Wiens has been in double-digits nearly every night, and is averaging 13.6 PPG on the year.
Brooklyn Wright, Jacob Hespeler
Wright has controlled the interior for the Hawks to this point in the season and is a big reason as to why JHSS is off to their best senior start in......well, perhaps ever. She's a regular double-double threat on any given evening.
Kirsten Leach, Preston
Don't look now, but the Preston Panthers are near the top of the standings with a 5-1 record --- and a big reason has been the strong forward play of Leach. She put home a season high 25 in a big 56-50 win over upstart Forest Heights.
Alex Klein, WCI
As if their guard play wasn't enough, Klein provides a solid interior presence for the Vikes. Like Wright above, she can also rack up double-digit points & rebounds on most evenings, and would likely be among the top 2-3 shotblockers in the WCSSAA circuit as well.
