WCSSAA Thursday: Mark's Picks

YTD Picks:  47-9 (.839)

There will only be one undefeated team left in WCSSAA Senior Girls Basketball after today's games, as the WCI Vikings (8-0) travel across Waterloo to visit the Bluevale Knights (8-0).

Obviously, this is "game of the day" material for the WCSSAA league today.

Both teams look to have firm grasps on representing WCSSAA at "AAAA" CWOSSA right now, but we'll see what Cameron Heights and Eastwood have to say about that.  The Knights will play Eastwood next week, while WCI will take on CHCI next week as well.

As for today's game, it will be an interesting measuring stick to see how good the Bluevale Knights actually are, going up against a team that (in my opinion anyways) is certainly deserving of at least a top-five seed at "AAAA" OFSAA this year.  The Vikes have beaten the top two teams from the GTA (as per hooptowngta.com's rankings) and have come close to knocking off the St. Thomas More Knights (another top 3 AAAA squad).

The reason that Bluevale may be able to stick around in this one is their balanced scoring.  On any given night, any one of several girls (Sarah Hamm, Natalie Bishop, Hannah Fishbein, Shannon Curran are the most likely suspects) could lead the team in scoring.

WCI is the most well-rounded team in CWOSSA, and I think their size advantage, particularly on the interior, will power them to victory in this one.  I actually look for Alex Klein to have a big game inside in this one, both offensively and defensively.  As (probably) WCSSAA's blocked shots leader, she'll be a key defensive weapon against Bluevale's dribble penetration.

Experience will trump youth in this one.  I'll take WCI by 15.

Here are the rest of Thursday's games:

Galt (2-6) at Elmira (4-4)
My Pick:  EDSS
I think the mini-slide of the EDSS Lancers (albeit facing a tough schedule) ends today at home in what is an important game for both clubs.

Cameron Heights (7-1) at Grand River (1-7)
My Pick:  CHCI
The Gaels, fresh off their bye, shouldn't have much trouble with the shorthanded Rens today.

Eastwood (6-2) at SJAM (1-7)
My Pick:  ECI
ECI will keep pace with the other top teams in the league by winning on the road at SJAM.

Huron Heights (0-8) at KCI (2-6)
My Pick:  KCI
I look for the KCI Raiders to keep their win streak going, at the expense of the winless Huron Heights Huskies.

Glenview Park (2-6) at Preston (7-1)
My Pick:  PHS
Preston is currently riding a 7-game win streak, and I don't see the Panthers losing today.  Actually, that would be a sure pick but I'll specify the Preston Panthers over the GPSS Panthers.

Jacob Hespeler (7-1) at Southwood (5-3)
My Pick:  JHSS
Big game here for both teams, and I think Southwood keeps it close.  I look for the Hawks to be ahead at the end, though.
