WCSSAA: Thursday Results

It was an interesting Thursday in the WCSSAA league, with several games coming right down to the wire.

Of course, one that many (including myself) thought might be close was exactly the opposite.

In a showdown between two 5-0 teams entering play, the Bluevale Knights blitzed the Cameron Heights Golden Gaels with a 17-0 run over the first 5:30 of the game to establish control.  The Knights wouldn't look back, as they cruised to a 52-25 win.

Meanwhile, the WCI Vikings stayed undefeated but got a run for their money from the Eastwood Rebels, who kept things close before falling by a 48-39 final.

As for those aforementioned tight games, the KCI Raiders showed signs of improvement, coming within 1 point of the Elmira Lancers (34-33).  Meanwhile, in another nailbiter, the Galt Ghosts picked up win number two for their club with a 46-44 squeaker over winless Huron Heights.

Here's the rundown, starting with senior:

Senior WCSSAA

Bluevale 52, Cameron Heights 25
My Pick:  CHCI
Natalie Bishop poured in 22 and Hannah Fishbein 14 as the Bluevale Knights scored early and often en route to a comfortable win.  Liz McLellan was held to 12 for CHCI, while Sam Murray added 6.

WCI 48, Eastwood 39
My Pick:  WCI
Each club put three players in double figures in what looks like it was a great game at ECI --- for WCI, Lindsay Lessard (14), Lynn Dabrowski (13) and Julia Pavlik (10).  Eastwood received double-digit efforts from Michelle Hudyn (18), Caitlyn Schlegel (11) and Lindsay Ward (10).

Preston 49, Southwood 37
My Pick:  PHS
The Panthers continue to stay near the top of the standings, improving to 5-1 with a win over one of their Cambridge rivals.  Kirsten Leach continued her strong play, with a 16-point outing, while Nikea Worrell added 9.  Anne Stotesbury had 9 points for SSS.

Forest Heights 52, Grand River 36
My Pick:  FHCI
The FHCI Trojans continued to add to the troubles of the GRCI Renegades with a 16-point win at home.  They were backed by Blair McNaughton, who pumped home 29 in the win; Sara Potter also had double figures for FHCI with 11.  Kailey DeBoer (13) and Candice Scott (11) were the top Renegade scorers.

Jacob Hespeler 40, Glenview Park 23
My Pick:  JHSS
The Hawks continue to roll with another win.  Brooklyn Wright (14) and Naomi Adams (7) led the way for the Hawks on Thursday, while Marja Vandermeulen and Emily McLean had 6 each for Glenview.

Galt 46, Huron Heights 44
My Pick:  GCI
The Ghosts edge the Huskies in a squeaker.  Scoring details were not available.

Elmira 34, KCI 33
My Pick:  EDSS
Speaking of squeakers, the Raiders almost pulled out the upset at home against Elmira.  Krista Wiens (11) and Julia Frey (8) did what they could for Elmira to prevent that from happening; Chloe Graves (9) and Nikaya Snell (7) topped the KCI scoresheet.
