The WCI Senior Vikings continued to prove that they are likely worthy of an "upper tier" seed at AAAA OFSAA (should they qualify), as they went 3-1 over the weekend at St. Thomas More in Hamilton.
On Friday, the Vikes got past Hamilton Brebeuf in their first game, 66-53, backed by 24 points and 8 rebounds from Lindsay Lessard, 22 points from Lindsay Taylor, and a solid all-around game (14 points, 7 rebounds, 3 blocks) from Alex Klein.
Saturday saw the continuation of pool play where WCI topped Burlington Notre Dame 38-31 (Lessard 15 points/7 rebounds/4 assists; Taylor 14 points/7 rebounds) and St. Anne's of Windsor 53-38 (Taylor 24 points/5 rebounds; Lessard 15 points/8 rebounds/5 assists).
This gave WCI a first-place finish in their pool and moved them through to the semifinals, against the host St. Thomas More Knights. STM is generally regarded as a "top 2-3 team" in the province and WCI gave them all they could handle, starting out by taking a 17-11 lead after one.
However, the Knights rallied with a big run in the second stanza to take a 32-24 lead going into the half. The Vikes would get to within five points on a couple of occasions in the second half but solid foul shooting allowed the Knights to close it out with a 64-56 victory.
Lessard again was strong, with 24 points, while Klein had 18 points and 7 rebounds.
WCI is back in league action starting tomorrow.
