Simcoe Reformer: Winning Is All In the Shot

Article By:  Jacob Robinson

DELHI -- It's not that the Delhi Raiders are in any way scared of the paint, they just felt no need to work inside during NSSAA senior girls basketball Tuesday.

Though the Raiders did little to post up against the Valley Heights Bears, they were quite content to drop shots near the perimeter.

"We were just looking for the open shot and if we had tons of time to make it, we did. We weren't worried about driving into traffic," said Delhi's Corrie Cowell.

That strategy helped get Delhi back to .500 with a 42-26 victory.

Mandy Mahler led the way for the Raiders with 12 points, and was joined on the scoresheet by six teammates. The Bears kept it close thanks to the shooting of point guard Savannah Shea and Rebecca Chamberlain. The two combined for 21 Valley Heights points.

The Bears were able to get within six at one point. But it was Delhi that went on an 11-2 run to finish the third, pushing the lead to 12 going into the final quarter.

With the game still up for grabs, Kelsey Vande Ven nailed a three-pointer to ice it in the final stanza.

"We just started working together and getting our plays down, taking our time with our shots and passing it well," said Cowell, who scored three points.

Valley Heights was also hoping to get to 2-2 on the year. Though the girls in purple seemed to have answers early on when Delhi tried to stretch the lead, eventually their opponents pulled away. Still, the game left the Bears with plenty to be pleased about.

"We were (pleased) actually, we just kept in it, we didn't get down," said Shea, who scored eight points. "We just kept in the game. That's the worst thing you can do is get down, once you get down, you lose the game. Even though we lost, we played well as a team and I don't count it as a loss in my eyes."

Delhi has the tough task of taking on the undefeated Simcoe Sabres on the road this Thursday. With their latest victory, Delhi is hoping to continue developing into a playoff contender as they head down the stretch.

"We're just focused on getting our plays down, working as a team, making our passes and taking good shots," said Cowell.

For the Bears, while they're happy with the play in their own end, Shea noted they would need to put up higher numbers the rest of the way.

"Our defence is strong, we're just working on offence and sinking our shots," she said. "The shots are there, just not all of them are going in."

In other senior girls action, the Sabres defeated the Waterford Wolves in a high-scoring contest 67-39.

Alyssa Becque and Jordan Vanderhaegen each scored 19 points for the Sabres, while Stephanie Ionita had 14 for Waterford and was followed by Rachel Szymezko with 12.

The Simcoe and Delhi juniors were also victorious in their respective matches. Final scores were not available at press time.
