St. James Lions Double Dip at Elmira Tournament

The St. James Lions came away with both the junior and senior tournament titles at the EDSS Invitational Tournaments this past weekend.

Senior

The senior field was quite intriguing, in that it featured my #2 (St. James), #3 (Elmira) and #4 (Preston) AAA senior teams entering play on Friday.

In pool play, the Lions defeated West Hill (Owen Sound) 46-32, backed by 17 from Brittany Gazzola.  They then took care of Kincardine DSS 52-21.  KDSS' Erin MacLennan was the game's top scorer with 11.

The other game in that pool saw Kincardine defeat West Hill 33-22, thanks in part to 13 from Megan Lowry.

The other pool was topped by the Preston Panthers, who defeated Walkerton Sacred Heart 59-7 (Nikea Worrell 16, Kirsten Leach 15) and then in a marquee matchup snuck past the host Lancers 45-42 (Worrell 13).  The Lancers topped SHHS 32-12 in the other pool game (Julia Frey, 12).

Upon completion of pool play, the teams "crossed over" to play one more game against their equal from the other pool (i.e. first place teams played for the championship, and so on).

West Hill took the consolation championship with a 47-28 win over Sacred Heart (Meaghan Lougheed 14), while Elmira snuck past Kincardine 27-23 (Kristen Wiens 10).

The championship final lived up to its billing.  The game was close early, with the teams tied at 25-25 at the end of the first half.  The Lions used a spurt at the start of the fourth frame to gain an advantage and would hold on for a 54-44 win.  Brittany Gazzola (15) and Chelsey Gazzola (14) topped the St. James scoring, while Nikea Worrell (15) and Kirsten Leach (14) led the way for Preston.

Junior

The junior tournament was straight pool play, with the Lions capturing their third consecutive title.  They also became the fourth straight D10 school to earn the tournament victory (JF Ross, 2008).
