WCI Shows Well at High-Profile St. Mary's Tip-Off Classic

This past weekend, St. Mary's HS in Hamilton hosted their annual "Tip-Off Classic", a tournament that always sees a high-calibre "OFSAA quality" field.

The WCI Vikings carried the CWOSSA banner in the tournament, but were in tough in their pool which featured Eastern Commerce (#1 or #2 team in the GTA); Michael Power (another top GTA club & OFSAA AAAA quarterfinalist in 2010) and St. Laurent from Quebec (who feature 3 provincial-calibre players and have won the last 9 Quebec provincial championships).

The Vikes got off to a great start on Friday (as mentioned below) by taking out Michael Power 56-43.  Lindsay Taylor netted 23 points, including a hot 5-for-9 performance from three-point range.  Lindsay Lessard had 12, Julia Pavlik 11, and Alex Klein provided a neat stat line including 8 points, 11 rebounds, and 7 blocked shots.

This win gave the Vikes some confidence going into two tough games on Saturday.  In their Saturday opener, WCI gave a strong effort but came up on the short end of a 68-53 scoreline.  Lessard (21), Taylor (18) and Pavlik (10) were again the top WCI scorers.

WCI battled Toronto Eastern Commerce in their final pool-play tilt; the Saints are generally regarded as the #1 GTA school after taking out Ajax Notre Dame recently, and have already had their way with CWOSSA foes (having defeated JF Ross 83-36 and St. James 77-19).

However, the Vikings were more than up for Eastern's up-tempo style of play, hanging around the whole way and taking the game to overtime.  In the extra session, WCI gained a slim advantage an held on for an 82-77 win, a victory that will likely go a long way from a seeding perspective should the Vikes qualify for OFSAA this year.

In that high-scoring tilt, WCI received 28 points EACH from Taylor and Lessard, while Klein chipped in with 15 points and 14 rebounds.

Unfortunately for WCI, despite finishing 2nd in their pool, only the top team advanced through to the semifinals (St. Laurent 3-0, WCI 2-1, Eastern Commerce 1-2, Michael Power 0-3).  However, the Vikes did come away with a lot of positives, including surely some increased confidence knowing that they can compete (and beat) some of the top competition provincially.
