Grand River CI: Senior Night

A nice photo here from yesterday's Grand River CI "senior night" prior to their win against Forest Heights.

I know a few teams that take part in this tradition, and, personally, I think it's a really cool touch.

Pictured in this shot are (Bottom L-R):  Lily Hoang, Steph Schumacher and Ana Milanovic.  (Top L-R):  Coach Scott Reynolds, Leticia Skeete, Kailey DeBoer, Tori Givlin, Ashley McNeil.

AAA CWOSSA: Qualification Update

I've been able to confirm a few details with regards to the "AAA" CWOSSA tournament in Brantford as they pertain to qualification.

As we discussed earlier, CWOSSA "AAA" is now a "6 team" event, compared to 8 teams in years previous.

The original qualifying list was as follows:

BAA vs. D4 - 1 team
WCSSAA - 2 teams
Brantford - 1 team
D10 - 1 team
D8 vs. D9 - 1 team

Now, in senior, there are no BAA (West Hill) or D4 (Westside) team.  As such, WCSSAA #3 will now play Brantford #2 for a third spot.

Here's how things look in senior, right now:

WCSSAA (2+1):  JHSS (#2 seed), SSS (#6 seed), EDSS (#7 seed), KCI (#8 seed), PHS (#11 seed).

Brantford (1+1):  North Park (#3 seed), Brantford CI (#4 seed).

D10 (1):  St. James (#4 seed), Guelph CVI (#6 seed).

D8 vs. D9 (1):  Monsignor Doyle vs. Holy Trinity

In junior, D4 does have an "AAA" rep (Westside SS).  As such, WCSSAA #3 will play Westside for a CWOSSA berth:

WCSSAA (2+1):  KCI (#3 seed), Elmira (#4 seed), Jacob Hespeler (#7 seed), Galt (#10 seed).

Therefore, the Galt vs. JHSS qualifying game winner will also get at least a play-in game against Westside for a CWOSSA berth.

Brantford (1):  North Park (#1 seed in D5 - Qualified due to PJC & BCI's losses yesterday).

D10 (1):  Guelph CVI (#1 seed); St. James (#3 seed)

D8 vs. D9 (1):  St. David vs. Holy Trinity

D8: Wednesday Picks

YTD:  13-7 (.650)

A couple of important games on the D8 schedule today, both with playoff implications:

St. Mary's (8-1) at Resurrection (8-0)
My Pick:  RCSS by 9
I certainly expect this to be a lot closer than the 21-point beatdown that Rez gave St. Mary's a few weeks ago; however, given the fact that St. Mary's needs to win this one by 22+ to overtake RCSS for first place, I don't think they'll show all their cards in today's game.

St. Benedict (4-5) at Woodland (4-4)
My Pick:  SBCSS by 6
Winner of this game gets the #3 seed in the D8 playoffs.  Should be a tight one, but I'll go with the Saints here.

D4: Scores/Standings Update

A couple of games to talk about over in the D4 league from Monday.

On the senior side, Centre Dufferin moved to sole possession of first place (7-1) with a 37-25 win over Erin DHS.

Rachel Krushnisky had 14 in the win, with Gen Potousky adding 12.  Pier Zuk (9) and Becca Morrison (8) led the way for Erin.

Also on Monday, Wellington Heights knocked off Emmanuel Christian 48-29, backed by 15 from Nicole Bauman and 14 from Stacey Harper.  Laura Kottelenberg had 8 to lead EC.

Senior D4 Standings
1.  Centre Dufferin 7-1
2.  Wellington Hts. 6-1
3.  Norwell 3-4
T4.  Emmanuel Christian 1-6
T4.  Erin DHS 1-6

Junior

Westside 40, Norwell 18
WSS:  Lauren Charron 18

Wellington Hts. 29, ECHS 11
WHSS:  Elyse Bridgewater 8
ECHS:  Bronte Vanderwoude 5

Junior Standings
1.  Wellington Hts. 7-0
2.  CDDHS 5-2
3.  Westside 4-3
4.  Norwell 2-5
5.  ECHS 0-8

Simcoe Reformer: Raiders Win on A Buzzer Beater

Article By:  Jeff Dertinger

DELHI - There's no better moment in basketball: Game tied, clock winding down, player lets a shot go just as the buzzer sounds.

Nothing but net.

It happened just like that Tuesday night at Delhi District Secondary School, where Kendra Freund made a buzzer beater in front of the hometown fans to give the Delhi Raiders senior girls a 38-36 victory over the Simcoe Sabres. It was a dramatic close to a game that deserved just that type of finish, as Delhi and Simcoe went toe-to-toe right from the start.

“I didn't know how much time was left on the clock, all I know was everyone in the building was yelling at me to shoot it, so I shot it,” Freund said.

The winning bucket capped off an eight-point comeback in the final four minutes for Delhi. Freund was at the centre of it all, scoring eight of her game-high 14 points in the fourth quarter. Corrie Cowell had a big game as well, pouring in 11, and point guard Morgan King was the main cog in a Delhi attack that consistently beat the Simcoe press.

That eight-point Simcoe lead was the largest of the game, with the second biggest gap occurring right off the hop when the Sabres jumped out to a 7-0 cushion. The Raiders responded with 10 straight points of their own, and the teams played virtually dead even through the next three quarters.

Delhi led 14-11 after one and 20-19 at the half before Simcoe took a 27-25 lead into the final frame. The visitors poured it on to open the fourth though, led by Jenna Schott and her 11 points.

Delhi seemed to be panicking a little as SCS built a 35-27 lead. But the Raiders regrouped and got back to playing the uptempo style they're known for, slowly chipping away at the lead and setting up the dramatic finish.

“We just did really well playing together and never giving up when things started going bad,” Freund said. “I know we really wanted to win that game heading into playoffs, just to know we can beat Simcoe if it comes down to us in the final.”

This was the first and only loss for the Sabres on the season, as they finish 7-1 and will host the NSSAA senior girls playoffs next week, starting with the semifinal games Nov. 6.

“I give Delhi a lot of credit, they ran up and down the floor and beat our presses. It was a good baskeball game,” Simcoe coach Bill Macovik said.

“Our girls are like any team, they don't ever want to lose. But like I told them in the huddle afterwards, it's better to lose now and go out with a win than the other way around.”

Simcoe will host Waterford (2-6) in the semifinals while Delhi (6-2) will face Holy Trinity. Holy Trinity defeated Valley Heights in the other game Tuesday, finishing their season with a 5-3 record.

The Titans beat Delhi in the second game of the season, but the Raiders returned the favour in an Oct. 18 game. Raiders coach Ruth Barr said her team has come a long way since a somewhat rocky start to the year.

“They really came together as a team. We had a tournament halfway through the year that really helped the girls find their identity,” Barr said. “Tonight was a good way to end the regular season, and hopefully we can keep that going next week.”

The Delhi-Holy Trinity game will go first next Tuesday at 6 p.m., with the Simcoe-Waterford contest immediately following at 7:30 p.m.

Junior Raiders stay perfect
The Delhi Raiders capped off an undefeated 8-0 campaign with a 50-18 victory over Simcoe Tuesday night.
Breanne VandeVen led the way with 21 points, while teammate Tessa Hamilton scored 14. Taame Muntz Fowler scored seven for the Sabres.

Holy Trinity beat Valley Heights in the other junior game Tuesday night.

The Raiders will host the NSSAA junior girls semifinals Nov. 6. The first game will pit Simcoe against Holy Trinity at 6 p.m., with Delhi and Valley Heights playing at 7:30 p.m.

Brantford Expositor: Junior Panthers Hold On To Advance to Semifinals

Article By:  Darryl G. Smart

PARIS - Courtney Boehmer and her Paris District High School Panthers teammates expected a battle in their Brant County junior girls basketball quarter-final with the Brantford Collegiate Institute Colts.

Little did they know it would be as dramatic as it was Tuesday afternoon.

After watching a huge lead dissolve by halftime, the Panthers scratched back for a 34-30 win at home.
"What an amazing way to win," Boehmer said.

"We knew we didn't play our best game the last time we played them when they beat us. We wanted to come out and bring our 'A' game. Both teams are so close, which made it a fun game, but to win the way we did is awesome."

Paris jumped out to an 11-3 lead after one quarter, with everything going the Panthers' way.

"We really wanted this game pretty bad and to take the lead like we did was pretty exciting," said Boehmer, who finished the game with seven points.

But then the Colts marched back to give themselves a 17-15 lead at the half.

"We couldn't believe it," Boehmer said.

"We were jumping out of our seats. And the nerves started to happen because we all knew we didn't want to lose at all."

She said the Paris coaches tried to calm the players.

"On the bench the coach was telling us to stick to our zone and, when we got the ball back to look for Avery (Hamill) to score."

It was a plan that worked, as the two teams exchanged points in the third quarter, before Boehmer, Hamill and Suzanne Kelly led the fourth-quarter comeback.

With four minutes to play, Hamill hit a jumper from 10 feet out to give the Panthers a lead that was quickly extinguished. But the never-say-die Panthers kept coming, eventually pulling away, with Boehmer scoring five in the fourth, while Hamill got four.

"When we caught up again, we all got so excited," Boehmer said.

"We knew we needed to hold them. That last two minutes was so long. It was the longest two minutes I could ever remember."

And with the win, the Panthers have earned a date with the undefeated North Park Collegiate Trojans in the Brant semifinals Thursday. But, most important, they've earned a shot to get to the Central Western Ontario Secondary Schools Association AA qualifier against the third place 'AA' team in District 4.

For the Colts, it was a disappointing way to end the season.

"It was a fun game. We always have good games against Paris. But to be honest, we were really hoping to go on," Caitlin Demeyere said. "It's been a long season and I think we're a bit tired. It was a good game on both sides. It's just too bad we were the ones that lost."

In the other quarter-final, the Assumption College Lions beat the Pauline Johnson Thunderbirds 38-15. The Lions will now face St. John's College Thursday in the other semifinal.

WCSSAA Senior: Final Standings & Playoff Matchups

I walked into a wild one at Galt Collegiate on my way home from work yesterday.

With Waterloo-Oxford thoroughly handling the SJAM Highlanders over in Waterloo, the Galt Ghosts needed just a win over 1-11 Huron Heights to secure the 12th and final playoff berth in the WCSSAA standings.

Huron Heights, though, was having none of it.

I walked into the gym with about 1:13 on the clock and a 38-37 Huron Heights lead (after Galt had missed the front-end of a one-and-one).  The next 40 seconds saw pressure defense, turnovers, a couple of great opportunities on each end (but no points) before Huron Heights regained possession and broke through Galt's press for an easy lay-up to extend to a 3-point lead and under :30 to play.

After a long Galt three-pointer was missed with under :10 left, the Ghosts regained possession on the rebound and were fouled (on the floor) but there was only 1.1 seconds left on the clock in a three-point game.

After the first FT was made, the second one was intentionally missed --- but did not hit rim, allowing Huron Heights to run out the remaining second once they were able to get the ball in bounds.

Jenna Gangl poured home 17 points for Huron Heights while Emily Gillingham added 6.  Carissa Grove and Courtney Davis had 7 each for the Ghosts.

Here's the rest of Tuesday's scores:

Cameron Heights 49, Bluevale 43
My Pick:  BCI by 8
Cameron Heights regained their fine form just in time, and receives a first-round bye as a result of this win --- though these teams will "likely" meet again next Tuesday in the quarterfinals.  Liz McLellan (13) and Hunter Johns (10) led Cameron Heights while Natalie Bishop had a game-high 19 for Bluevale with Sarah Hamm adding 16.

Elmira 53, KCI 27
My Pick:  EDSS by 9
The Lancers locked down the 7th seed while KCI will be 8th after this one --- and it certainly looks like Elmira is hitting their stride at the right time.  Krista Wiens poured in a game-high 22 points for EDSS, with Julia Frey notching 10.  Maddie Lafleur (7) and Nikaya Snell (5) were the top KCI performers.

Jacob Hespeler 48, Glenview Park 28
My Pick:  JHSS by 25
In a game that didn't affect the WCSSAA standings, the Hawks finished with an 11-1 mark and 2nd place overall thanks to this win.  Candice Wright had 13 and Brooklynn Wright 11 for the Hawks while Jocelyn Kivell had a game-high 14 for GPSS with Tiana Barfoot adding 5.

WODSS 64, SJAM 29
My Pick:  WODSS by 15
Even without three key rotational players, the Crusaders cruised to victory here.  Maddy Horst had 17 while Kayla Harley stepped up with a big 16-point performance.  Sam Fowler had 15 and Danielle Schaeffer 8 for the 'Landers.

WCI 44, Eastwood 12
My Pick:  WCI by 35
Lindsay Taylor had 18 and Alex Klein 10 as the Vikes finished up with a perfect 12-0 regular season.  Mel Samuel had 5 and Kayla Shantz 3 for the Rebels.

Southwood 43, Preston 30
My Pick:  SSS by 12
Nicole Barnard (18), Taylor White (12) and Cali Doran (11) were all in double-figures for Southwood, who will host Preston again on Thursday in a first-round playoff game.  Ashley White had 16 to lead the Panthers here.

Final WCSSAA Senior Standings

WCSSAA Junior: Final Results & Playoff Matchups

Bunch of exciting games on the WCSSAA junior schedule to wrap up the regular season on Tuesday.

In fact, if you throw out the Forest Heights - Grand River score, all of the other 5 games were actually decided by 5 points or less.

Let's get right to the results, and then take a look at the final standings and playoff matchups:

Bluevale 36, Cameron Heights 32 (OT)
Bluevale's overtime win here allowed them to take 6th place in the WCSSAA standings, while the Gaels fall to the 8th spot.  Megan Reid led Bluevale with 14 and Maddy Fielding added 8; Emma Attanson had 8 for Cameron while Salome Mekasha netted 7.

KCI 33, Elmira 29
The Raiders take the #3 seed with this win, while the Lancers (10-2 as well) will still have a first-round bye at #4.  Amy Graves topped the Raider scoring with 10, while Alia Hazineh had 8.  Nicole Cressman poured in a game-high 16 for the Lancers, with Sydney Jones adding 6.

Grand River 65, Forest Heights 48
The Rens completed their perfect WCSSAA regular season with a comfortable home win over Forest Heights.  Tara Deboer had 22 and Nyamuoch Teny 13 in the win for the Rens; Tyrah Wilson had 16 and Linna Liou 14 for Forest Heights.

Galt 31, Huron Heights 26
Emma Buck had 8 and Amy Cureton added 6 for the Ghosts, who will finish 10th after their win on Tuesday.  Kiara Chin had a game-high 10 for the Huskies.

Jacob Hespeler 29, Glenview Park 26
A tight-one here, but the Hawks avoided the big upset and actually moved all the way up to 7th in the final standings.  Jasmine Ramcharan had 8 and Taylor Finamore 6 in the win; Rylee Foster led Glenview with 8 points.

SJAM 47, WODSS 44
The Highlanders locked down the #5 seed with this important win; Milica Koprivica had 16 and Taylor Trush 12 for SJAM, while Payton Hofstetter had 13 and Hannah Appleton 10 for the Crusaders.

Bye Wins:  PHS (SSS); WCI (ECI)

D10 Tuesday: Spartans Stun Royals

So much for what was supposed to be a relatively uneventful day in D10 senior girls' hoops.

Three of the four games were decided within 3 points, and one of them was a shocking result as Centennial (2-11) defeated JF Ross (9-4) by a 39-36 final on the road at JF Ross.

Trying to track down some details from that one, but I can tell you at this point that Kendra Achonwa and Hannah Ferguson had 12 each for Centennial while Julia Robertson (game-high 15 points) and Alanna Vosper (7) were the top JF Ross scorers.

Here's the other Tuesday scores:

Lourdes 65, St. James 62
My Pick:  Lourdes by 10

The Lions nearly pulled out a big road win on Tuesday themselves but fell just short in this one.  Hannah Pearsall put home a huge 24-point effort for Lourdes, while Monica Trimble added 14.  Brittany Gazzola scored 20 and Ashley Benham 14 for St. James.

CWDHS 45, Guelph CVI 42
My Pick:  CWDHS by 8
Chloe Trapp scored 14 for the Falcons as they locked down 5th place in the D10 standings with this win.  Hanna Chidwick had 12 for the Gaels.

Bishop Mac 48, Orangeville 23
My Pick:  BMAC by 27
Claire Fenton had a game-high 12 for the Bears in this one, while Ellie Young netted 10 for the Celtics to help keep them undefeated (13-0) on the campaign.

D10 Senior Standings
1.  Bishop Mac 13-0
2.  Lourdes 11-2
3.  JF Ross 9-4
4.  St. James 8-5
5.  CWDHS 5-8
6.  Guelph CVI 3-10
7.  Centennial 2-11
8.  Orangeville 1-12

....not much is slated to change on the final day of the regular season.  In fact, all teams cannot move up or down with the exception of St. James and JF Ross, who will face each other at JFR.  St. James would need to win by 10+ in order to take over third place there.

Junior

JF Ross 39, Centennial 26
JFR:  Candice Geisel 17, Maddy Darling 9
CCVI:  Halle Milne 8, Emma Cain/Emma Korol 6

St. James 38, Lourdes 20
STJ:  Nastassja Herriot 9, Donna Zen 8
OLOL:  Elizabeth Endicott 7, Elise Roche 5

Bishop Mac 61, Orangeville 13
BMAC:  Cindy Seke 11, Jessica Burke 10
ODSS:  Caitlin McCleary 6

Guelph CVI 32, CWDHS 12
GCVI:  Sydney Wilson 8, Abby McIntyre 7
CWDHS:  Gabby Teri & Mercedes Ecclestone 4

Junior D10 Standings
1.  Guelph CVI 11-2
T2.  Bishop Mac 10-3
T2.  St. James 10-3
T4.  JF Ross 7-6
T4.  Centennial 7-6
6.  Lourdes 4-9
7.  CWDHS 3-10
8.  Orangeville 0-13

....still a lot to be decided in junior, with one game to go.

Guelph CVI (11-2) should defeat Orangeville (0-13) on Thursday to lock up first place in the D10 league.

Bishop Mac (10-3) holds the head-to-head tiebreak over St. James (1-1 in their 2 games but a +9), so will clinch 2nd with a win over Lourdes (4-9).

Despite their loss to JF Ross yesterday, Centennial has the inside track for 4th place right now as they have CWDHS (3-10) in their finale while Ross will play St. James.  That quarterfinal game is going to be very important as the winner will (likely) pick up the D10 #1 "AAAA" spot and an automatic CWOSSA berth.

WCSSAA: Playoff Matchups & Seeds

I've done a few tiebreakers and posted the (unofficial) WCSSAA junior & senior girls' seedings on my Twitter Page, so check it out there!  I'll try and transfer it over here shortly!

WCSSAA Tiebreak: UPDATED Information

My apologies to the Preston Panthers, who are actually 4-7, and not 3-8 as I initially indicated earlier.  Seems like I overlooked their key upset win (over KCI) at home.

This does leave an intriguing tiebreak potential today between SJAM (currently 3-8) and Galt (2-9) --- assuming Galt defeats Huron Heights and Waterloo-Oxford gets past the 'Landers.

This potential is made more intriguing by the fact that SJAM and Galt did not meet "head to head" during the season and would have to go to alternative tiebreakers.

Let's take a quick look (and again, this is all UNOFFICIAL until confirmed by league sources).....

1.  Wins against common opponents

Both would have 3 (SJAM:  GPSS/HHHS/PHS; GCI:  GPSS/HHHS/ECI)

So...we move on to the "+/-" tiebreaker:

2.  +/- Tiebreak --- games against common opponents are considered, with each game capped at 15 (+/-).

Common Opponents:  KCI, GPSS, ECI, CHCI, FHCI, PHS, BCI, HHHS, SSS.

The results from today's game would be added to the equation, i.e. Galt's result against Huron Heights and SJAM's game against WODSS.

SJAM (-55):  KCI (-7), GPSS (+8), ECI (-11), CHCI (-15), FHCI (-15), PHS (+3), BCI (-15), HHHS (+4), SSS (-7), WODSS (TBD).

Galt (-63):  KCI (-13), GPSS (+11), ECI (+3), CHCI (-15), FHCI (-15), PHS (-4), BCI (-15), HHHS (TBD), SSS (-15), WODSS (-15).

So, for today:
  • SJAM qualifies for the playoffs with a win, or a Galt CI loss.
  • Galt will qualify for the playoffs as the #12 seed with a win AND an SJAM loss IF:
    • they can "make up" the current 8-point +/- gap on SJAM as a result of their games.  For example, a 5-point Galt win combined with a 5-point SJAM loss would be enough to overcome the current 8-point deficit.
  • SJAM will qualify for the #12 position even with a loss and a Galt win if:
    •  they can maintain their current +/- lead over Galt Collegiate.  For instance, a 2-point GCI win combined with a 4-point SJAM loss.
