The (CWOSSA #1 ranked) senior WCI Vikings were in the GTA this past weekend, taking part in the Humber College Invitational tournament.
After a very solid opening day with wins over Sudbury Lockerby (50-26; Lindsay Taylor 14) and Barrie Eastview (50-36; Alex Klein 19 Points & 12 Rebounds), the Vikes advanced to the semifinals to take on Windsor St. Anne's on Saturday morning.
That game was tight throughout, with the Vikes holding an early lead before St. Anne's assumed a narrow lead late in the game. Despite a late WCI basket that tied the game at 38-38 with under 0:30 to play, St. Anne's scored on their final possession to come away with a 40-38 victory.
WCI would rebound from that tough loss to capture the 3rd place game over "AA" powerhouse General Amherst from Amherstburg (outside of Windsor). Alex Klein registered another double-double (10 points, 10 rebounds) as the Vikes took that game 42-38.
"Hopefully all of these good games this weekend will stand us in good stead for our big game against W-O on
Tuesday," said WCI head coach Craig Nickel.
The tournament featured an interesting side-story as Michael Power (Toronto) defeated their league rivals, St. Joseph's-Wellesley in triple overtime (63-60) ---- despite having only THREE PLAYERS available to finish the game. Yes, they were playing 3-on-5 for the final 1:19 of the third overtime period (after playing 4-on-5 from early on in the 3rd OT). You can check out that story here.
