The playoff picture is virtually set in District 8.
The four spots in the Senior Girls' division are wrapped up, although the individual order is still to be determined.
Yesterday's action saw St. Mary's demolish Monsignor Doyle 47-3 (scoring details unavailable), while Woodland ran away from Rockway to the tune of 55-22. Rachel Carrick had 15 for WCHS, and Emma Kschesinski led Rockway with 12.
This means that Resurrection (7-0), St. Mary's (7-1), Woodland (4-4) and St. Benedict (4-4) have clinched playoff berths. Monsingor Doyle (1-7) and Rockway (1-8) round out the six-team league; however, Monsignor Doyle will advance to a CWOSSA "AAA" play-in game due to the absence of St. David from this year's league.
Resurrection is a huge favourite to hold on to top spot in the standings, given that 2 of their 3 remaining games are against MDCSS & RMC. I expect their other contest against St. Mary's to be much closer than last time (45-24); however, that first result means that St. Mary's would need to beat RCSS by 21+ to overtake them in the standings --- unlikely at best.
The winner of the St. Benedict - Woodland game should take 3rd place in the D8 standings. Woodland won their previous match-up by only one point, so assuming that doesn't happen again, the winner of this game will have the tiebreak edge.
Junior
Over in the D8 junior division, Resurrection has a firm grasp on first-place after a 35-28 win over St. David yesterday afternoon.
Although Rez's leading scorer, Celia McGlynn, was held in check (8 points), Kelsey Caza netted 11 in the win. Bobbi-Sue Hentges led St. David with 9.
Other games went generally as expected on Wednesday.
St. Benedict topped PRDG 41-15 (scoring details unavailable), while St. Mary's received 14 points from Becca Siewert and 12 from Mallory Gitzel en route to a 41-28 win against Monsignor Doyle. Yasmeen Smith had 11 for Doyle, while Megan Van Heeswyk added 6.
Lastly, Woodland's Julianna Thomson netted 27 in a 38-18 win over "A" rival Rockway. Emily Bux added 6 for the Cavs; Lindsay Mustard had 8 and Katarina Klassen 4 for the Flames.
Woodland's win means that they will represent D8 at "A" CWOSSA.
As for the playoff chase, Resurrection and St. Benedict both have 10-1 records, though RCSS is a +2 in their head-to-head matchups and has the current tiebreak. St. David (8-3) is in the playoffs as a result of Monsignor Doyle's loss yesterday, while St. Mary's (7-4) virtually clinched a spot yesterday as well.
The Eagles are three games clear of MDCSS & Woodland with three games remaining; as such, they need a single win OR for MDCSS and WCHS to each lose at least once in their final three games. St. Mary's should be able to control their destiny with a win over PRDG in one of their final three contests.
Assuming the Eagles grab that final playoff spot, St. David would go through as the "AAA" CWOSSA rep for D8. The "AAAA" representative would be determined by playoff outcomes.
