CWOSSABasketball.com Junior Power Rankings: Week 5

You juniors are making it tough on me.

Sure, things at the top are similar but several interesting results --- particularly in the competitive D10 league as well as tournament play --- have changed things up from position #5 downwards this week.

Here's a look at what I've got this week:

1.  Grand River CI Renegades / Kitchener
Last Week:  #1
No change here as the Rens took the title at the Hoopdome Tournament in Scarborough, besting a very strong Notre Dame (Ajax) program in the tournament championship game.

2.  North Park CVI Trojans / Brantford (AAA)
Last Week:  #2
Despite a loss to a tough St. Thomas Aquinas (London) team in the JF Ross tournament final, the Trojans did defeat CWOSSA #4 WCI in the semifinals; they are also the lone undefeated D5 team through 8 games of the regular season.

3.  St. John's College Green Eagles / Brantford
Last Week:  #3
Hot on the heels of the Trojans are their Brantford rivals, the SJC Green Eagles.  Like last week, the Eagles have beaten teams that they should beat to retain their #3 overall CWOSSA ranking.

4.  Waterloo CI Vikings / Waterloo
Last Week:  #4
The Vikes finished 3rd at the JF Ross tournament this past weekend, squeaking past fellow ranked opponent Guelph CVI and losing a close one to North Park before defeating Ross in the 3rd place game.  With an 8-1 league record, the Vikes should finish among the top 2 or 3 teams in the WCSSAA standings.

5.  Elmira DSS Lancers / Elmira (AAA)
Last Week:  #6
The Lancers are the beneficiary of a couple of the aforementioned results; their 8-1 league record is equal to WCI's although the Lancers dropped a close one to WCI in their regular-season matchup.  Elmira has a couple of tough WCSSAA challenges remaining, including KCI and Cameron Heights, in their final 3 games.

6.  Guelph CVI Gaels / Guelph (AAA)
Last Week:  #5
The Gaels lost a close one to WCI in tournament play, then were defeated by Bishop Mac.  A loss to St. James has them dropping a spot, but they are still the #1 team in the D10 standings.

7.  Bishop Macdonell HS Celtics / Guelph (AA)
Last Week:  #7
The Celtics survive as the #7 team for another week, despite a surprising loss yesterday to Centennial.  They did defeat GCVI in tournament play, and beat St. James in league action, which helped to balance things out.

8.  Kitchener CI Raiders / Kitchener (AAA)
Last Week:  #9
The Raiders did what they were expected to do this week --- beat Galt and Jacob Hespeler --- in league play.  They'll pick up a bye-win next week, before closing their schedule with a couple of tough opponents (Elmira & Bluevale).

9.  St. James HS Lions / Guelph (AAA)
Last Week:  NR
The Lions defeated Guelph CVI and lost to Bishop Mac in a D10 league that seems to be all about match-ups this year.  Are they peaking at the right time?  Definitely a team to keep an eye on down the stretch in the D10.

10.  Assumption CS Lions / Brantford
Last Week:  #8
Nothing wrong with what Assumption did this week, but rather teams like St. James that picked up signature wins to help pass them.  They'll be in tough to advance to CWOSSA (them or St. John's take the AAAA berth) but they shouldn't be overlooked from a CWOSSA-wide perspective.

Dropped Out:  Resurrection CSS / Kitchener (LW:  #10)

Honourable Mentions / "On The Radar"
St. Benedict CSS / Cambridge
Resurrection CSS / Kitchener
SJAM / Waterloo
Cameron Hts. / Kitchener
JF Ross CVI / Guelph
Bluevale / Waterloo
