The Jacob Hespeler Hawks got all they could handle in both their games on Saturday, but ended up walking away from the University of Guelph with a tournament title, taking the annual Gryphon-Celtic "Battle for the Cure" final in a double-overtime thriller, 57-55 over the Lourdes Crusaders.
The tournament actually featured 4 CWOSSA teams ranked in my most recent "top 10".
Brooklyn Wright was phenomenal in the final, pouring in 22 points (and doing a nice job on the boards), while rookie Monica Trimble poured in a game-high 23 for Lourdes.
The Hawks held off the tournament hosts, Bishop Mac, 38-31 in the semifinal, paced by Candice Wright's 14 and Brooklyn Wright's 12. Andrea Priamo had 6 for the Celts.
Lourdes came back in the second half to take out another Guelph school, JF Ross, 46-43 in the other semifinal. Monica Trimble (17) and Hannah Pearsall (13) led the way for the Crusaders, while Sydney Resch (14) and Julia Robertson (10) were both in double figures for Ross.
