Third year forward Grace Fishbein (Waterloo, ON/Bluevale CI) has gotten off to a very hot start for the Memorial University Sea-Hawks, a CIS school in St. John's, Newfoundland.
As per the most recent statistical update after the first weekend of play, Fishbein's 24.0 PPG places her 3rd at present among all CIS players. She scored 22 points on Saturday in a 80-64 win over Cape Breton University and followed that up with 26 points in a 64-56 loss to those same Capers the next afternoon.
Despite being on the far east coast, Memorial has attracted several other quality CWOSSA players over recent years, including Fishbein's teammate Kim Devison (3rd year from St. David in Waterloo) and men's players Mike Helsby (2nd year from Waterloo SJAM) and Will Bradbury (1st year at Memorial, 2nd year overall from Forest Heights in Kitchener).
As for the rest of the CWOSSA contingent for Memorial, their weekends went as follows:
Devison saw 47 minutes of court time for the Capers as a point guard, going 0-for-4 from the floor. She has pulled down 2 rebounds, dished out 3 assists and added 4 steals.
Bradbury, who transferred over from London's Fanshawe College, saw his first 2 official CIS games end up with him scoring 19 points (9.5 PPG), 3 rebounds, and 5 assists.
As noted on Memorial's athletic site, Helsby has been battling some injuries and did not play in Memorial's first 2 games.
Lastly, if the Fishbein name sounds familiar for regular blog readers, it should. Grace's younger sister, Hannah, has been a key performer for Bluevale's junior girls team that finished 1st during the WCSSAA regular season.
