D8: Junior & Senior Celtics Get By Mustangs in Cambridge

The St. David Celtics saved their best efforts for last -- quite literally -- by besting the Monsignor Doyle Mustangs (in both junior & senior) down in Cambridge yesterday afternoon.

Though both wins were important, the junior win (28-24) actually earned the Celtics a CWOSSA "AAA" berth --- the winner of yesterday's game took the 4th and final playoff spot with a 4-6 record.

Nicole Jamison (8) and Paige Howard (6) led St. David, while Jade Loehle had a game-high 12 for MDCSS.

In the senior showdown, which was a high-scoring affair, the senior Celtics survived a 29-point barrage from the Mustangs' Sam Edwards and ended up on the right side of a 72-67 final.  Emily Brown (18) topped three Celts in double figures; Breann Lavigne (12) and Carly Cameron (12) also had big games for St. David.  Alongside Edwards' monster effort, Amelia Walsh had 19 for MDCSS.

In other D8 junior action on Monday, the Resurrection Phoenix obliterated the Rockway Flames by a 71-4 final, backed by 13 points from Marley Neiscier and 12 from Sarah Schultz.  Emma Kschesinski again led the Flames, this time with 3 of their 4 points.

Down in Cambridge, the St. Benedict Saints survived a bit of a scare (35-30) against the St. Mary's Eagles, though both teams were firmly entrenched in their respective playoff positions.  Dana Milani (13) and Jenelle Case (8) led the Saints while Monica Rocha had 9 for the Eagles.

Wednesday's junior semifinals will see Resurrection (#2) host St. Mary's (#3) and St. Benedict (#1) host St. David (#4).

In the senior circuit, Resurrection clinched 3rd place by blasting Rockway 78-9.  Janelle Santi had 23 points in the win, while Megan Robinson added 14 for the winners.  Ali Gondosch led the Flames with 4.

The other game between St. Mary's and St. Benedict was not immediately reported; however, it will have no bearing on the final standings.  I'm going to assume that St. Mary's won unless I'm informed otherwise.

Wednesday's senior semifinals will have St. Mary's (#1) host Monsingor Doyle (#4) and Resurrection (#3) travel to play St. David (#2).
